Pollyanna (Hayley Mills) is the daughter of Jeannie and Rev John Whittier, and niece of Aunt Polly Harrington. Her name was paired by her two deceased sisters; Polly and Anna. After her family died, she moved to Beldingsville, Vermont to live with her aunt. She's shy and friendly, but playing the glad game that her father taught her when she was little. She made friends with Nancy the housemaid, Mr. Pendleton (Pendergast in the Disney film) the lonely old man, Jimmy Bean, the orphan boy, Dr. Chilton a kind handsome doctor, and Mrs. Snow an old woman who does nothing but lying in her bed all day. She teaches everyone that there's some things to be glad about when you think about happy thoughts instead of being gloomy and unhappy. Suddenly, she had a terrible vehicle accident and her legs are paralyzed. She told Aunt Polly that she's very glad that she lives with her and loves her so much. Aunt Polly had finally forgotten about her harsh duty and beginning to start the glad game too, which it makes her feel better now. In the end of the novel, Pollyanna wrote a letter to Aunt Polly that she's starting to walk again and she can't wait to go back home.
